Officially in Europe

Today was another normal day at sea except we did have something exciting happen: we have officially crossed into Europe!  About 2 hours ago we saw our first land since we left.  There were 2 very small islands in the middle of the ocean that were formed from volcanoes (similar to the Hawaiian Islands).  They definitely look like islands that could be in the show LOST since they are so far out here in the middle of nowhere.  They are formed here because of the Mid-Atlantic ridge which is where the North American plate and European plate collide.  This means that since we have passed it we are officially in Europe!  I overheard someone saying that the islands are owned by Portugal and we were close enough to see that there were definitely some people living on the larger one (approx. 4,000?).  All I know is that must be one close-knit town because it is pretty much impossible to leave!

The rest of the day was pretty much uneventful – just a regular class day and no special events tonight.  We get to jump forward another hour tonight so we are moving right along!
